Granville South High School has an enrolment of approximately 505 students including around 75% from language backgrounds other than English and twelve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. The schools main focus is on improving student learning outcomes through quality teaching practices underpinned by targeted whole-school teacher professional learning. We are committed to developing a learning culture which emphasises critical thinking and ensures students develop self-discipline in their study habits. The school has recently been named as a partially selective high school in the Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA). Students in our Gifted & Talented Creative and Performing Arts Year 7 class undertake 5 hours of specialist extension workshops and ensembles, performing with above stage students. The school believes students with a talent in the Creative and Performing Arts need to learn with like-minded children guided by teachers who have a commitment to excellence in teaching and learning. In 2009 a Year 12 student was successful in having his HSC major artwork included in the Art Express annual exhibition. Our welfare system provides a safe, respectful and caring learning environment; encourages personal excellence; promotes relevant learning experiences; and supports student participation and success. A united approach to achieving these values resulted in the school receiving a South Western Sydney Region Director's Choice award for excellence in Student Welfare. Our Community of Schools initiative aims to increase our relationships with our partner Primary. The main focus is to improve students' literacy and numeracy levels from stages 3-5 across three key areas; Literacy, Numeracy and Science. There is a strong emphasis on a collegiality between the high school and primary school teachers with a focus on classroom teaching and learning. The value-added performance of our Year 9 students in numeracy, reading, writing, spelling and grammar & punctuation for NAPLAN is at or above state growth rates. These positive learning outcomes demonstrate the success of our specialised literacy and numeracy initiatives in targeting the learning needs of students in Year 7 & 8. The school is partnered with JP Morgan, one of the world's leading investment banks, as part of our involvement in the Australian Business and Community Network (ABCN) program. Students participate in Aspirations, a mentoring partnership involving Year 11 students with a focus on career planning and leadership skills and Football United, a program which fosters social equity, inclusion and respect for cultural, ethnic and religious differences. In 2010 a Year 12 student was selected as Captain of the Australian team which participated in the Football for Hope tournament in South Africa during the Soccer World Cup. In 2009, a Year 11 student was awarded a national Doug Jukes Memorial Scholarship for academic performance as part of the ABCN program.
